The Identity of an Artist
The expression of art is individual and can take on a different meaning of authenticity from the artist to the dealer, and the purchaser.  In an episode of Law and Order (www.netflix.com) the search for authenticity through an artist’s rendition of works conveys the message to the viewer that the search for acceptance of self can be complicated.   The artist lives through other artists’ expressions in order to gain acceptance as an artist within the bourgeoisie.  It is the dealer however, through his assurance of the authenticity which creates the sell that alters the level of the meaning of the paintings.  Yet the use of scientific inquiries reveals not only the artist’s distinctive style of copying, but a distinctive pattern that links her to the deaths of two other artists.  Killing two people reveals the artist’s intense desire for acceptance as a real artist; however, it is only at this point that her expression of work becomes truly valuable for the bourgeoisie.   The paradox is that her authentic work is not fine art but her fine work is perceived as authentic until it is revealed otherwise. In this current period of self expression how difficult is it to determine what is authentic, and   who ultimately decides?
Do the advances in technology change our perception of authenticy or increase our understanding?  Bendix’s historical overview of the use of science for authenticity of literature during a time of political transitions is a source of validation for authenticity however; the use of this method for authencity in art of various cultures is questionable.  Because of the many representations of art the use of scientific tools may defeat the purpose of the expressions of folklore.  Bendix's book is important in developing truths about authenicity not only in art but all areas of folklore and self.
