Authenticity and its origins Adrian Mendoza

The concept and issues of authenticity has plagued humanity for some time now. Authenticity has been linked most notable to God which indicates purity. For example, Gottsched tied poetry to nature and from nature it was corrolated to God (pg.30). Since human were corruptible poetry in his mind could not be tied to them. It must be kept in mind that his perception of authenticity is not the same we use today. It was more or less a manner of describing the marvelous. Of course others like Bodmer and Breitinger disagreed with Gottsched. They connected authenticity with the culture of a people aka the folk.

In today's day, the word authenticity dictates originality and to an extent superiority. Whether it be food or clothes the consumer tends to flock for what is original. But then again we must ask ourselves what is original? For example in recent years there as been a major crackdown on bottlegging. There is not much difference between a burned CD and the original copy except for the price. In other countries, like Mexico and China bottlegging has become its own industry. Mexico City has its own marketplace, Tepito in which liquor, clothes, music, and cell phones are the major illegal merchandise sold. Which leads me to believe that the concept of authenticity and its meaning is cultural.
